Phorm's technology
It is easiest to think of Phorm’s system as being like an online recommendation engine. It automatically brings users personalised content from around the web and personalised advertising based on their interests. Plus it comes with a built in protection against online fraud and dangerous software.
We built our technology from the ground up with privacy in mind. As a mark of our seriousness about protecting user privacy we’ve opened up our technologies, policies and processes to examination by experts such as 80/20 Thinking. It agrees that we’ve adopted a ‘privacy by design’ approach.
Among the many privacy principles that we’ve built into the system are:
• Consumers will be able to choose if they want to switch the service on or off – at any time. They’ll be given a clear and ongoing choice.
• Users will be able to switch the system off at the account level meaning that none of their traffic can be processed or analysed.
• No personal data, no browsing histories or IP addresses are stored. This also means that no personal data can be shared or sold to anyone else.
• Users will be anonymous right from the outset so the system never knows who anyone is. This is a process that cannot be reversed to reveal any personal information since no data of this kind is ever stored.
Offering a personalised internet whilst talking about improved privacy seems counterintuitive, but this is one of our key achievements. Unlike other online companies, our approach is to use the minimum data possible to show users relevant and useful information.
Our approach to privacy
is industry leading
