| BT Trials to Track Web Surfers BT will soon begin trialing a new form of online advertising (powered by Phorm technology) that could "have profound implications for the internet economy and online privacy." It is estimated that today only 30 percent of web pages have any advertising. By targeting ads based on the user and not the content of the page, Phorm's technology will allow for the successful monetization of the remaining pages on the Internet. Analysts at Charles Stanley estimate that, if successful, Phorm "could generate $1.5bn in 2012." |

| The Law of Phorm Struan Robertson, editor of Out-law.com, argues that while Phorm's technology may technically break several laws, in today's Internet "technical breaches are common." Robertson argues that the critical issue in most of the laws in question is consent, which Phorm has promised will always be presented to users. As long as this obligation is met, Robertson does not believe Phorm will face any serious problems in the courts. |

The statement applauds Phorm's "willingness to engage in open public debate" on its system. It warns that "For a long-term and beneficial model, it is vital that the public trust advertisers and their ISPs to protect them and their privacy." It also encourages Phorm to adopt an opt-in model as a way of continuing to build strong public relations. |

| Web Publishers Are in Bullish Mood - But For How Long? The Association of Online Publishers released its sixth annual census showing that revenue has been up significantly. However the census also revealed concerns about the impact the wider economy could have on publishers' future revenue. Publishers are hoping that new technologies will present opportunities to stave off these challenges. Interestingly, despite the recent controversies around Facebook's Beacon system and Phorm's ISP based ad-targeting system, 84% of publishers still see behavioural targeting as a key opportunity for growth. |
